Low-intensity Pulsed Ultrasound Gets Basketballer Back on the Court Faster
“If I could afford to own one in my home for my three boys when they have injuries, I would. I believe it really works”, says loving mum Hanaa about the Osteotron.
Hanaa has three boys who all play basketball at Westfields Sports High School. The philosophy of the school is to allow talented sports students to pursue their sporting dreams in partnership with their education. Hannah’s eldest son Shareef has dreams of taking his basketball far having been named MVP of the Year at a State level. At 14 years old, Shareef is 6’2”, has a size 17 shoe and is still growing!
In 2013, after playing in the Nationals, Shareef injured his fifth metatarsal while on the court. A non-surgical management plan was recommended and his physio suggested using low-intensity pulsed ultrasound to help heal the fracture. Hannah went online and researched the technology as well as seeking professional advice to learn as much as she could. Shareef rented the Osteotron from Medi-Rent for four months with great results.
His foot healed well but not long after, when trying out for the local U16s Division 1 team, Shareef felt his knee gave way after a fall and he was diagnosed with Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the knee; a joint disorder where cracks form in the articular cartilage and the underlying subchondral bone. OCD is caused by blood deprivation in the subchondral bone which leads to avascular necrosis. Recovery in adolescents is good due to effective bone remodeling in this age group.
Shareef underwent keyhole surgery and his mother once again hired the Osteotron to use post-surgically. He had an MRI three months later showing advanced healing.
Shareef is more determined than ever to be in his prime for next season, exercising and looking after his diet. He won’t let his body slow him down. We wish him well for a bright future.
